What we are reading...

Our most read nighttime story lately has been "The Story of Ferdinand" by Munro Leaf. The story of the sweet bull who prefers to sit under his tree and smell the flowers rather than fight is a great lesson for little boys who learning to not fight. Graham thinks he likes to sit in the shade because it is summer and he is hot; Graham says he would rather sit in the shade, too! Rob thinks he likes the flowers because they smell good and maybe Ferdinand's mommy grows the flowers for him to smell. However, Rob wants to visit a bull ring and see a Matador (or Man-doo as he calls them). Each time we read, we find something new to like about this story.

What we parents didn't know is this 76 year old story was originally written as pacifist propaganda at the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War. It was initially banned after publication, but eventually became a "mucho" loved book published in many languages throughout the world. In schools, this text is currently being used with lessons to fight bullying. And, if you've seen The Blind Side you remember Sandra Bullock's character reads this to her children and decides Mike is Ferdinand.

For more the source of some of these tidbits and more information, visit this NYTimes article about the 75th anniversary of this adorable book we love. May you not find yourself in a bullring but under a shady tree today!

What We Are Reading

We've been reading a lot more than we've been blogging lately. The past few weeks, the boys have enjoyed Shel Silverstein, reading from Where The Sidewalk Ends. In fact, we've read it so much, it inspired my TechEd project which required a lesson plan incorporating technology and WikiSpaces.

You can view my WikiSpaces project at https://chenault.wikispaces.com but I beg you not to judge; WikiSpaces is straight HTML so its very limiting (as much as my professor's requirements were cumbersome) so its not attractive. What is uniquely cool about WikiSpaces is the ability to collaborate; everyone can go and edit, add, etc. It truly embraces Web 2.0.

Anyway, what we've been reading... the boys love the poems and the drawings. When I asked them which was their favorite, Graham said enthusiastically replied: "the whole book!"

What we are reading...

It's Read Across America Week and we are celebrating with Dr. Seuss! We are reading The Lorax and hope to see the movie this weekend. We haven't decided yet if we think the Once-ler is a bad guy or he just didn't listen. But Graham is certain that Thneeds are not things we will be buying.

On a side note, have you heard in the news that politicians have cited the book and movie recently, alleging politically charged motives for the release of the movie? A few politicians were quoted on CNN yesterday, and when I read to the boys last night, I admit to paying extra attention. It certainly could be interpreted with political motives, especially against industrialization. Partner it with the John Denver Arbor Day song about plant a tree, and you have  commercial for tree-huggers everywhere!

In our home, we haven't focused on the aspect the news seems to be highlighting. Both our boys immediately got the theme to not hurt the homes of people and animals. They were sad when the barb-loots, fish and birds had to all leave. We are beginning to talk about what the boy will do with the seed the Once-ler throws him... We love a book we can talk about!

There should be college course on Theology, Sociology and Politics according to Dr. Seuss!

What We Are Reading

Gearing up for Read Across America, we're loving Dr. Seuss. Right now, Horton Hears A Who is a big favorite, especially for Rob. I wonder why?

Tonight, we read a new book! We loved it!

It's Hard to be Five: Learning to Work My Control Panel by Jamie Lee Curtis is entertaining, funny, instructional/educational and Graham related to it. Yeah for loving a new book!
